Volkswagen announced that combustion-engine Touareg production ends in 2026. The final phase is marked by the Touareg FINAL EDITION, which could be ordered until the end of March 2026. Official history confirms three generations and more than 1.2 million vehicles sold — not a fourth generation.

In 2023 Volkswagen substantially upgraded Touareg III with new HD matrix headlights, revised exterior design, updated suspension and revised display/operating technology. This remains Touareg III — not Touareg IV.

Touareg R eHybrid
The Touareg R eHybrid remains the performance flagship of the combustion Touareg family, combining plug-in hybrid power with 4MOTION. Volkswagen lists 340 kW / 462 PS for the current R eHybrid specification. It is not a battery-electric vehicle.

Premium large SUV / luxury SUV, 2002–2026 for the combustion Touareg. Three generations; current generation is Touareg III 2018–2026. 2023 is a major technical/design update, not a new generation. 2025–2026 FINAL EDITION / final production phase. Drive: 4MOTION. 1. Generations & platforms
Touareg I — 2002–2009
The first Touareg established Volkswagen in the premium SUV segment: permanent four-wheel drive, serious off-road capability, luxury-car comfort, air suspension on relevant configurations, sophisticated electronic chassis systems, petrol and diesel engines, and exceptional historical derivatives (V6, V8, V10 TDI, W12, R50). Hybrid belongs to later-generation context, not Gen I. Volkswagen states that more than 471,000 first-generation Touaregs were sold.
Touareg II — 2010–2018
Volkswagen presented the second generation in 2010. More focused on road comfort while retaining 4MOTION and towing/off-road capability. Powertrain families: V6 petrol, V8 petrol, V6 TDI, hybrid. Adaptive air suspension on selected versions, active roll stabilisation on equipped vehicles, advanced driver assistance, premium interior, strong towing capability. Later eHybrid-related development belongs to the next generation.
Touareg III — 2018–2026
The third generation moved to Volkswagen Group MLB Evo architecture and shares broader technical context with premium Group SUVs (Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus). These are technical relationships, not identical vehicles. eHybrid variants including Touareg R eHybrid belong here.
2023 major update — still Gen III
Treat as touareg-iii → 2018–2023 and 2023-update–2026. Do not create Touareg IV from the 2023 update. Volkswagen upgraded HD matrix headlights, exterior design, suspension and display/operating technology.
FINAL EDITION — 2025/2026
A special final-production specification of Touareg III, not a new generation. Volkswagen states that it could be ordered until the end of March 2026 and that combustion production ends in 2026.
VW Group technical relationships
Use Q7, Cayenne, Bentayga and Urus only for relevant technical discussions. Do not imply identical specifications, towing limits or service intervals.
Always log generation (touareg-i / touareg-ii / touareg-iii), Gen III stage where relevant, derivative, drivetrain, model year, engine code and market before comparing themes. Never invent Touareg IV.
2. Market & model information
- Engine, trim, transmission, 4MOTION hardware and equipment vary by market, generation and year
- Service programmes and inspection systems are market-local — never assume UK MOT globally
- US / Canada: historic retail generations differ from current European Gen III packs
- China and other regional packs: treat as original-market VIN cases — not EU clones
Market is context, not a wall. One page plus selector. Touareg powertrains, emissions, trim names, towing specifications and PHEV availability vary by market. A Polish Gen III V6 TDI owner can still use UK/German/Spanish discussions where generation, engine code and gearbox match.
3. Engines, powertrains & body styles
Never merge Gen I V10 TDI data with later V6 TDI, or Gen II hybrid with Gen III eHybrid. Petrol (V6, V8, turbocharged V6) and diesel (V6 TDI, V8 TDI, V10 TDI) are generation- and market-dependent. Transmission: manual on selected early versions; automatic transmissions; 8-speed automatic on later generations. 4MOTION AWD is fundamental.
Petrol — V6 / V8 / turbo V6
Generation/market dependent. Same displacement badge does not guarantee identical hardware.
Diesel — V6 / V8 / V10 TDI
Historically important. The V10 TDI of the first generation produced 230 kW/313 PS and 750 Nm. Diesel suitability depends on use and emissions regulations.
Gen II hybrid
Touareg II introduced Volkswagen’s early production hybrid powertrain. Keep it distinct from Gen III eHybrid.
Gen III plug-in hybrid / Touareg R eHybrid
Touareg III introduced eHybrid variants, including Touareg R eHybrid. Current official R eHybrid specification: 340 kW / 462 PS system power, 700 Nm class, 4MOTION, plug-in hybrid, performance-oriented flagship. Confirm VIN and market sheet.
Transmissions & drivetrain
Manual on selected early versions; automatics across generations; 8-speed automatic on later Touareg generations. Store gearbox code. 4MOTION is identity.
Body styles & role
Five-door large SUV. Touareg has traditionally combined luxury touring, off-road ability, heavy towing, high-speed motorway use and premium comfort. Volkswagen describes the current model as a large SUV, comfortable touring vehicle, towing vehicle and authentic off-roader. Towing capability is configuration- and market-specific — not a universal figure.

Height changes, leaks and warning lights on equipped cars only — not every Touareg.
Compressor / air-supply system
Where air suspension is fitted. Log compressor operation and overnight ride-height loss separately.
Adaptive damping
Configuration-dependent. Record damper brand, mileage and warning lights.
Cooling system
Resolve by engine family. Do not copy one cooling story onto every Touareg.
Diesel DPF / EGR / AdBlue
Only on relevant diesels. Usage profile matters.
Automatic transmission servicing
Configuration-dependent. Keep gearbox-code evidence; “lifetime” fluid claims still need invoices.

Do not publish a universal Touareg service interval. Record VIN, market, model year, generation, engine code, powertrain, transmission, 4MOTION configuration, mileage, service date, engine oil, filters, spark/glow plugs, timing system, gearbox service, transfer case, differentials, propshaft, coolant, brakes, tyres, air suspension, 12V battery, PHEV battery/charging records, software, recalls and invoices.
