Volkswagen T-Roc Owners Club — Maintenance & Provenance
Independent owners’ resource. This page is produced by The Owners Club and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Volkswagen AG or Volkswagen UK. Confirm specifications, recalls and service against your handbook (VIN) or an authorised retailer. Volkswagen launched the T-Roc in 2017 between T-Cross and Tiguan. Two generations only: Gen 1 2017–2025 on MQB, enhanced for model year 2022, then replaced by a completely new Gen 2 in 2025 on MQB evo.
Own a Volkswagen T-Roc? Add it to your Garage. Record servicing, repairs, tyres, documents, inspection history, recalls, software and ownership milestones. Know your T-Roc. Record its history. Connect with owners. Keep its story. Useful identity is T-Roc + generation (Gen 1 / Gen 2) + Gen 1 stage (early / 2022-update) + body style + engine code + transmission + FWD/4MOTION + derivative + model year + market.

Latest T-Roc News & Identity Updates
Updated 2025- Global developmentGlobal
Second generation launched in 2025
The new T-Roc is the second generation, replacing the 2017–2025 model. It uses MQB evo and introduces a hybridised powertrain range, updated assistance systems and a higher-quality interior. Volkswagen describes it as developed from scratch — not a facelift.
- TechnicalGlobal
Larger and more practical
The second-generation T-Roc is 4,373 mm long with a 2,631 mm wheelbase and 475 litres of luggage capacity, making it 122 mm longer than its predecessor.
- Regional / product identityGlobal
Hybrid-only second generation
Volkswagen states that the second-generation T-Roc is its first product line with a complete drive range consisting exclusively of hybrid systems. Launch framing includes electrified petrol (eTSI) rather than the previous generation’s conventional petrol/diesel mix. A published launch example is the 1.5 eTSI at 110 kW / 150 PS — confirm VIN and market sheet.
Model overview — global T-Roc identity
Compact SUV / CUV, 2017–present, positioned between T-Cross and Tiguan in Volkswagen’s European SUV range. Two generations: Gen 1 2017–2025 on MQB (2022 major update is not a new generation) and Gen 2 2025–present on MQB evo, described by Volkswagen as developed from scratch. Manufacturer data stays distinct from owner-reported themes. VIN / engine code / handbook remain authoritative.
1. Generations & platforms
T-Roc Gen 1 — 2017–2025 (MQB)
Five-door compact SUV/CUV. FWD or 4MOTION depending on configuration. First presented in 2017. Powertrains (market/year): 1.0 TSI, 1.5 TSI, 2.0 TSI, 1.6 TDI, 2.0 TDI, R 2.0 TSI and selected market-specific configurations. Manual or DSG. Technical stages: t-roc-gen1-early and t-roc-gen1-2022-update — not new generations.
2022 enhancement — still Gen 1
Treat the 2022 changes as a major facelift/update within Gen 1, not a new generation. Volkswagen itself describes the first generation as enhanced for model year 2022.
T-Roc Gen 2 — 2025–present (MQB evo)
Genuine new generation, not a facelift. Presented in August 2025. Five-door compact SUV on MQB evo with electrified/hybrid drive systems. Drive is market/derivative dependent. Launch fact-sheet example: 1.5 eTSI at 110 kW / 150 PS. Technology framing includes next-generation infotainment, advanced Travel Assist, Emergency Assist, IQ.LIGHT LED matrix, head-up display, remote/memory parking functions, upgraded cockpit and more cabin/luggage space.
Gen 2 published dimensions
Length 4,373 mm; width 1,828 mm without mirrors; height approximately 1,562 mm; wheelbase 2,631 mm; luggage 475 litres. 122 mm longer than the predecessor.
T-Roc R — performance derivative
High-performance Gen 1 derivative with 2.0 TSI and 4MOTION. Keep R identity explicit — not a separate generation. Do not invent a current Gen 2 R as a generation of its own.
T-Roc Cabriolet — Gen 1 body-style derivative
Retain as a Gen 1 body-style derivative. Do not assume it continues into Gen 2.
Always log generation (t-roc-gen1 / t-roc-gen2), Gen 1 stage where relevant, body style, derivative, drivetrain, model year, engine code and market before comparing themes. Never merge the 2025 T-Roc into Gen 1.
2. Market & model information
- Engine, trim, transmission, drivetrain and equipment vary by market, generation and year
- Service programmes and inspection systems are market-local — never assume UK MOT globally
- US / Canada: not sold as mainstream retail T-Roc under that nameplate
- China and other regional derivatives: treat as original-market VIN cases — not EU clones
Market is context, not a wall. One page plus selector. Distinguish EU/UK, Australia/NZ where offered, Turkey, Poland, Spain, Hungary, and China/regional derivatives rather than treating every T-Roc as mechanically identical. A Polish Gen 1 1.5 TSI DSG owner can still use UK/German/Spanish discussions where generation, engine code and gearbox match.
3. Engines, powertrains & body styles
Never merge Gen 1 diesel data with Gen 2 hybrid data. Depending on market and year, Gen 1 used TSI petrol, TDI diesel, T-Roc R 2.0 TSI, manual, DSG, FWD and 4MOTION on selected variants. Gen 2 uses eTSI / hybridised petrol and further electrified variants depending on market/year, with DSG/automated transmissions and FWD or AWD depending on derivative.
Gen 1 petrol — TSI
1.0 TSI, 1.5 TSI and 2.0 TSI depending on market/year. Same displacement badge does not guarantee identical hardware or timing system.
Gen 1 diesel — TDI
1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI on relevant markets/years. Diesel suitability depends on use and emissions regulations. Not a Gen 2 theme.
Gen 2 electrified / hybrid
Launch range is electrified petrol systems rather than the previous generation’s conventional petrol/diesel mix. Published launch example: 1.5 eTSI 110 kW / 150 PS. Confirm VIN and market sheet for further variants.
T-Roc R
Gen 1 high-performance 2.0 TSI with 4MOTION. Record modifications honestly.
Transmissions & drivetrain
Manual and DSG on Gen 1; Gen 2 uses DSG / automated configurations as specified by market. FWD or 4MOTION/AWD depending on derivative. Store gearbox code and drivetrain.
Body styles
Core five-door SUV. T-Roc Cabriolet is a Gen 1 derivative only.
Confirm VIN / generation / engine code / gearbox / drivetrain before logging timing, DSG, diesel, 4MOTION or hybrid themes.
4. Honest pros
- Strong compact-SUV packaging
- Good driving position
- Strong Volkswagen parts/support ecosystem
- Huge owner community
- MQB technical relationships (Gen 1) and MQB evo technology (Gen 2)
- Wide Gen 1 engine choice
- Strong performance derivative (T-Roc R)
- Excellent platform for detailed provenance
5. Honest cons
- Large specification variation
- Gen 1 diesel and petrol maintenance differs substantially
- DSG servicing is configuration-dependent
- 4MOTION adds additional maintenance considerations
- Gen 1 used cars can have complex equipment combinations
- Gen 2 hybrid systems require model-specific records
- T-Roc R examples may be modified or heavily driven
6. Common owner-reported themes
These are investigation themes, not universal faults. Always filter by generation, engine code, gearbox, market and model year. Never present owner reports as confirmed defects.
Infotainment / software
Software and infotainment quirks appear across stages — log version, date and campaign. Gen 2 next-generation infotainment is not a Gen 1 MIB clone.
12V battery / electrical
Weak 12V can look like wider electrical failure, especially on cars with ADAS and connected services.
DSG behaviour / service
Configuration-dependent. Log gearbox code, fluid invoices and adaptation work.
Cooling-system issues on relevant engines
Water pump / cooling themes on relevant petrol and diesel engines — record mileage, parts and engine code.
Suspension and tyre wear
Compact-SUV use, wheel size and 4MOTION tyre matching all change wear. Record sizes and dates.
Diesel DPF/EGR (Gen 1 relevant cars)
Only on relevant Gen 1 diesels. Usage profile matters. Not a Gen 2 hybrid topic.
Petrol engine-specific issues
Resolve by engine code. Do not copy one TSI story onto every T-Roc.
ADAS calibration
Cameras, radar and assistance systems need calibration after screen/bumper/windscreen work — log it.
Cabriolet roof / mechanism
Roof operation, seals, water ingress, mechanism and drainage — Cabriolet only.
7. Service & maintenance
Do not publish a universal T-Roc service interval. Record VIN, market, model year, generation, engine code, powertrain, transmission, drivetrain, mileage, service date/type, oil specification, filters, spark/glow plugs, timing system, DSG service, 4MOTION service where applicable, brakes, tyres, coolant, 12V battery, hybrid-system records for Gen 2, software, recalls and documents.
| Item | Typical interval | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled service — VW Fixed / Flexible | Per VIN / handbook | Market, generation, MY, engine and gearbox specific — never one T-Roc table. |
| Engine oil & filter | Per programme | Oil grade is engine-code specific. Keep invoices. |
| Timing system | Engine-code specific | Belt vs chain differs — never invent a T-Roc-wide claim. |
| DSG service (where fitted) | Per gearbox & handbook | Configuration-dependent. Keep gearbox-code evidence. |
| 4MOTION (where fitted) | Per handbook / drivetrain | Haldex-class fluid/strainer on relevant Gen 1 4MOTION cars — not generic ATF. |
| Brake fluid | Per handbook (often ~24 months) | Calendar item — confirm market schedule. |
| 12V battery test | Every service / on symptoms | Infotainment/ADAS cars are sensitive to weak 12V. Gen 2 hybrid cars still have a 12V. |
| Gen 2 hybrid-system records | Per handbook / VIN | Do not copy Gen 1 petrol/diesel rows onto Gen 2. |
| Recall / campaign check | At every service | VIN- and market-specific — never generalise a T-Roc recall across all generations. |
UK Fixed vs Flexible figures, when quoted, are UK market framing only.
8. Inspection & roadworthiness
Use market-specific terminology. Inspection history should be stored against the vehicle VIN.
- UK MOT — not a global name for every test
- Germany TÜV/HU
- Spain ITV
- Poland / Hungary periodic inspection
- Turkey TÜVTÜRK
- US state-specific inspection/emissions; Australian state/territory and NZ rules
A pass is not a manufacturer service stamp. Record both.
9. Recalls & campaigns
- Check manufacturer campaign tools for this VIN and market
- National recall authorities differ — do not copy one country’s campaign list globally
- Log completion in Digital Service History
Store campaign/recall number, market, VIN applicability, production range, component, risk, remedy, completion status, source and check date. Never generalise a T-Roc recall across all generations.
10. Official resources
