About Volkswagen
Volkswagen has been building cars in Wolfsburg, Germany since 1937, and the Beetle it launched there went on to become one of the best-selling cars in history before the Golf took over as the brand's defining model from 1974 onward. As the founding brand of the Volkswagen Group — which also owns Skoda, SEAT/Cupra, Audi, Porsche, Bentley and Lamborghini — VW sits at the centre of the platform-sharing web that runs through most of this site's guides: an issue documented on a Golf very often applies directly to a Skoda Scala or SEAT Leon built on the same underpinnings.
Confirmed directly from Auto Express's own 2026 Driver Power manufacturer table (published 24 June 2026, 30 brands ranked): Volkswagen placed 26th, with a score of 82.86% — well behind Skoda's 20th place (83.96%) in the same table. Auto Express's own summary line on VW notes that owner satisfaction has been "lacklustre" across several recent years running, not just a single-year dip, so this isn't presented as a one-off blip.
Platform legend
Short reference for the platform shorthand used in the model cards below.
| Platform | Used on (VW) | What it means for owners |
|---|---|---|
| MQB | Golf, Tiguan (pre-facelift), Touran | Volkswagen Group's modular combustion-engine platform — shared underpinnings mean shared engines, gearboxes and common issues across VW/Skoda/SEAT/Audi siblings |
| MQB A0 | Polo, T-Roc, T-Cross, Taigo | The smaller-footprint version of MQB, used for superminis and small crossovers — same shared-parts logic, smaller cars |
| MQB Evo | Golf (current gen), Tiguan (current gen), Passat, Arteon | An updated version of MQB with revised electronics architecture and, in most cases, newer-generation engines |
| MEB | ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, ID. Buzz | Volkswagen Group's dedicated electric-vehicle platform — no combustion-engine parts at all; maintenance shifts toward battery, coolant-loop and software items instead |
| MLB Evo | Touareg | A longitudinal-engine platform shared with the Audi Q7/Q8, Porsche Cayenne, Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus — mechanically closer to those than to any other VW in this list |
| T-platform (T6.1 / T7) | Transporter, Caddy | Volkswagen's dedicated van architecture — confirm which generation (T6.1 vs T7) before assuming a service item applies, since the two use meaningfully different platforms under the same "Transporter" name |
Two VWs on the same platform often share the same known issues and the same fix — that's why guides on this site are frequently cross-linked across models.

Volkswagen UK uses Fixed vs Flexible (LongLife) on most petrol and diesel cars, and a separate 2-year inspection for the ID. family. Miles or months — whichever comes first — unless noted. Open each model schedule for DSG, Haldex and generation notes. Always confirm for your VIN in the handbook or retailer system.
| Model | Years | Regime | Miles | Months |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Golf / Polo / Passat / Tiguan / T-Roc / T-Cross / Taigo / Arteon / Touran / Caddy (ICE) | Typical MQB / late UK | Fixed | 9,300 | 12 |
