Audi A5 Owners Club — Maintenance & Provenance
Independent owners’ resource for Audi A5. Produced by The Owners Club — not affiliated with Audi AG or Audi UK. Specifications, recall status and warranty terms change — always confirm against your handbook (VIN) or an authorised dealer. The A5 spans three technical eras: 8T/8F (2007–2016), F5 (2016–2024) Coupé/Sportback/Cabriolet with S5/RS 5, and the 2024+ PPC Sedan/Avant family as the combustion successor to the A4. This hub focuses on ownership, maintenance and provenance — not an exhaustive engine-code matrix.
Owners Club · Digital Service History. Know your A5. Record its history. Connect with owners. Keep its story. Useful identity is A5 + generation (8T/F5/PPC) + body style + engine code + transmission + drivetrain + model year + market — never “A5” alone. Fixed/Flexible service figures are manufacturer framing by VIN; they are not universal. Timing systems vary by engine code — never invent belt or chain claims across the nameplate. MHEV plus and RS 5 PHEV are distinct powertrain types.

Model overview — global A5 identity
This hub covers Audi A5 8T/8F (2007–2016), F5 (2016–2024) and 2024+ PPC (Sedan/Avant A4 combustion successor) with global technical identity and market-aware service, inspection and availability. Body styles: Coupé, Sportback, Cabriolet on earlier gens; Sedan and Avant on 2024+. S5 and RS 5 stay linked but separate. Current RS 5 is PHEV; volume A5/S5 use combustion with varying electrification. Manufacturer Fixed/Flexible data stays distinct from owner-reported themes. VIN / engine code / handbook remain authoritative. German launch technical data is not universal.
1. Generations & model evolution
A5 8T / 8F — 2007–2016
First A5 generation. Coupé, Sportback and Cabriolet; S5 and RS 5. Shared important architecture with the contemporary A4 while positioned as the sportier design-led model. Log 8T Coupé / 8F Cabriolet / Sportback, model year, facelift, engine code, transmission, drivetrain, market and trim.
A5 F5 — 2016–2024
Second generation Coupé, Sportback and Cabriolet; S5 and RS 5. MLB longitudinal-engine architecture family with extensive petrol/diesel, quattro and multiple transmissions. Major facelift around 2019/2020. Especially important for the used market.
A5 2024–present — PPC A4-successor family
Audi introduced the new A5 as the combustion-engine successor to the A4 on Premium Platform Combustion. Current body styles: A5 Sedan, A5 Avant, S5 Sedan/Avant, RS 5 Sedan/Avant. Initial European launch framing included 150 PS / 204 PS TFSI, 204 PS TDI MHEV plus and 367 PS S5 TFSI — exact availability varies by market and model year. Technology: PPC, E³ 1.2 electronics, MHEV plus, new infotainment, digital lighting, expanded ADAS.
A4 predecessor naming (context)
The 2024 A5 continues the A4’s combustion mid-size line under a new name. Link the A4 B9 hub for predecessor context — do not invent A4 specifications here, and do not treat old A5 Sportback as a facelift of the new Sedan/Avant.
S5 and RS 5 — performance derivatives
Earlier generations used V6 petrol, turbo petrol, diesel performance configs (selected markets), NA V8 and twin-turbo V6 on RS 5. Current S5 uses a 3.0 TFSI-based performance powertrain (UK lists ~367 PS / 550 Nm / ~4.5s). Current RS 5 is PHEV (UK lists up to ~639 PS / ~3.6s / ~51–52 mi e-range). Keep S5/RS 5 identity separate from volume A5.
Always log generation (8T/F5/PPC), body style, model year, engine code, transmission family and drivetrain before comparing themes. Market launch years overlap.
2. Market & model information
- Engine, trim, transmission, body style and drivetrain availability vary by market and year
- Service programmes (Fixed/Flexible) and inspection systems are market-local — never assume UK MOT globally
- US/Canada/AU sold A5 retail historically — line-ups differ from Europe; confirm VIN
- China long-wheelbase A5 existed where Audi documented it — not a separate B-generation
Market is context, not a wall. A Polish A5 owner can still use UK/German/US discussions where generation, engine code and transmission match. Use the selector for engines, service and inspection panels only. China LWB is a regional derivative where documented.
3. Engines, transmissions, drivetrain & bodies
The A5 has a broad engine history. Do not present one engine list as universal. Always resolve generation, engine code and transmission family first. V1 is catalog coverage — not an exhaustive engine-code matrix.
Petrol / TFSI
Earlier: 1.8 TFSI, 2.0 TFSI, 3.0 TFSI, V6 petrol and performance-specific engines depending on generation/market. Current European launch framing included 110 kW / 150 PS and 150 kW / 204 PS TFSI — drivetrain/transmission combinations vary by market.
Diesel / TDI
Earlier: 2.0 TDI, 2.7 TDI, 3.0 TDI and market-specific derivatives. Current documented framing includes 2.0 TDI 150 kW / 204 PS with 48V MHEV plus, common-rail, DPF, EGR and SCR where fitted — confirm VIN.
MHEV / MHEV plus
Earlier generations used conventional 12V or 48V mild-hybrid systems on selected versions. Current generation moves to MHEV plus, which Audi describes as enabling partially electric driving and electric parking/manoeuvring on applicable models. Keep MHEV plus distinct from PHEV.
Plug-in hybrid (current RS 5)
The latest RS 5 introduces PHEV into the A5 performance family. Use dedicated battery, charging and battery-health fields. Do not label all electrified A5 versions simply as “hybrid”.
Transmissions
Manual, Multitronic CVT, S tronic, Tiptronic, current 7-speed S tronic and current performance automatic configurations. Exact transmission must be tied to generation, engine, model year, market and drivetrain. Example: current A5 2.0 TDI MHEV plus technical data specifies a wet-clutch 7-speed S tronic where documented.
Drivetrain
Front-wheel drive, quattro, quattro ultra and performance quattro systems. Exact system varies by generation and powertrain. Current S5 and RS 5 use quattro-based performance drivetrains.
Body styles
Coupé, Sportback and Cabriolet on 8T/F5. Sedan and Avant on 2024+ PPC. Important: the new A5 Sedan/Avant is not a facelift of the old A5 Sportback.
S5 / RS 5
Performance derivatives with generation-specific engines. Current S5 ~367 PS / 550 Nm framing (UK); current RS 5 PHEV up to ~639 PS with electric range ~51–52 miles depending on version (UK lists). Confirm local specification.
Confirm VIN / engine code / gearbox family before logging timing, Multitronic, S tronic, diesel emissions or quattro themes.

6. Common owner-reported themes
Not diagnostic advice — themes to investigate and document. Connect each theme to the correct generation, engine code, transmission or system. Distinguish manufacturer schedule data from owner themes.
Engine
Oil consumption, leaks, timing-system maintenance, turbocharger faults, cooling issues, ignition faults and engine warning lights — always engine-code specific.
Timing systems
A5 engines use different timing-system designs. Record engine code, timing system, inspection/replacement history, mileage and invoice evidence — never invent one 8T/F5/PPC rule.
Multitronic
Selected earlier FWD A5s used Multitronic CVT. Record CVT behaviour, fluid/service history and control/mechatronic work separately from S tronic/Tiptronic.
S tronic / Tiptronic / automatic
Clutch wear, judder, hesitation, mechatronics, gearbox warnings, Tiptronic fluid/service history and software — tie to the exact transmission family and code.
Diesel emissions
Depending on generation: DPF, EGR, AdBlue/SCR, NOx systems and emissions warnings — never apply one diesel checklist to every TDI.
Cooling
Thermostat, water pump, coolant leaks, overheating and thermal-management faults — log with mileage and parts.
quattro
Differential/service work, drivetrain noise, propshaft, axle components and quattro warnings.
Suspension and steering
Dampers, springs, control arms, bushes, wheel bearings, steering and alignment.
Brakes and tyres
Tyre size/wear, discs, pads, brake fluid and alignment — performance variants cost more to keep.
Electrical / infotainment
MMI, virtual cockpit, Bluetooth, navigation, cameras, parking sensors, connectivity, software updates and warnings.
ADAS
Depending on specification: Audi pre sense, adaptive cruise, lane assistance, traffic-sign recognition, parking assistance and camera/radar calibration.
PHEV / RS 5
For current RS 5 PHEV owners: HV battery, battery-health tests, charging, electric range, HV cooling, charging faults, software and electric-drive warnings.
7. Service & maintenance (market-aware)
Concrete figures must come from the Audi Fixed or Flexible programme for this VIN — not a universal A5 rule. Use the market selector for regional framing. Timing row is always engine-code specific.
| Item | Typical interval | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled service — Audi Fixed / Flexible | Per Audi VIN schedule | Manufacturer framing — confirm handbook / dealer system |
| Engine oil & filter | Per Fixed/Flexible | Oil grade is engine-code specific |
| Timing system inspection / replacement | Engine-code specific | Belt vs chain — never invent across 8T/F5/PPC |
| Spark plugs (petrol) / diesel emissions items | Per handbook / code | DPF/EGR/AdBlue where fitted — confirm |
| Air / cabin filter | Often annually / per handbook | Confirm VIN |
| Brake fluid | Per handbook (often ~24 months) | Calendar item |
| Multitronic / S tronic / Tiptronic (where specified) | Per gearbox & handbook | Keep transmission-family invoices |
| quattro / drivetrain fluids (where fitted) | Per drivetrain & handbook | Diff / propshaft / ultra hardware vary |
| PHEV HV battery / charging (RS 5) | Per handbook / battery health | Separate from ICE service stamps |
| 12V battery / recall check | Every service / on symptoms | MMI/ADAS sensitive · recalls are VIN-specific |
Service intervals can vary by market, model year, engine, transmission, operating conditions and VIN-specific requirements. Always verify the correct manufacturer schedule.
8. Inspection & roadworthiness
Never title this section “MOT” globally. Local system names change with the market selector.
- United Kingdom — MOT
- Spain — ITV
- Poland — periodic technical inspection
- Hungary — periodic inspection
- Turkey — TÜVTÜRK
- United States — state-specific inspection / emissions
- Record certificates separately from manufacturer service stamps
Use market CTAs in the selector panel for official portals where curated.
9. Recalls & campaigns
- Check manufacturer recall resources for the VIN and market of registration
- UK: GOV.UK vehicle recall checker (where applicable)
- US: NHTSA VIN recall search — market-specific
Recall and campaign availability can vary by market, production date and VIN. Do not treat a generic recall list as proof that an individual A5 is affected — especially useful across five generations with incomplete paper trails.
10. Official resources
Manufacturer manuals and regional sites plus The Owners Club guides. VIN-specific Audi information takes precedence over generic model summaries.
- Audi owner manuals / regional documentation for non-UK markets
- myAudi where supported — software and digital services
- Service schedule and maintenance records in your Digital Garage
- A4 B9 predecessor context — confirm local Audi A4 resources separately where needed
