Audi Q7 Owners Hub | Generations, Service & Garage | The Owners Club

The Audi Q7 is Audi’s large premium SUV across two generations: 4L (2005–2015) and 4M (2015–present). The 2019/2020 major redesign remains 4M — not a new generation. SQ7 is the performance derivative under 4M. Keep Q7 hybrid quattro (4L) and Q7 TFSI e (4M) as separate electrified families. Air suspension is an equipment option; seating and towing are VIN/spec fields. VIN / engine code first — no invented universal intervals or towing figures.

Model overview — global Q7 identity

This hub covers the Audi Q7 as two generations — 4L (2005–2015) and 4M (2015–present) — with global technical identity and market-aware service, inspection and availability. The 2019/2020 major redesign remains inside 4M. SQ7 is a performance derivative under 4M. Keep Q7 hybrid quattro (4L) and Q7 TFSI e (4M) as separate electrified families. Air suspension is an equipment option — not universal. Seating configuration and towing capacity are vehicle-specific / VIN-dependent. Manufacturer data (Fixed/Flexible, handbook) stays distinct from owner-reported themes. Use the market selector for engines, programmes and local inspection names. VIN / engine code / handbook remain authoritative. V2 later: engine codes → gearbox codes → suspension codes → towing package → MY → market → trim → service profiles + PHEV infrastructure.

1. Generations & platforms

  • 4L — first generation (2005–2015)

First Q7 on longitudinal premium SUV architecture. Five-door SUV with optional third-row seating, quattro, petrol and diesel (incl. 3.0 TDI, 4.2 TDI and rare V12 TDI), tiptronic automatics, and air suspension on selected versions. Q7 hybrid quattro belongs here — not under TFSI e.

  • 4M — second generation (2015–present)

MLB / MLB evo family with lower kerb weight, updated quattro, MMI/digital cockpit evolution, advanced assistance, broader engines, Q7 TFSI e PHEV and SQ7 performance derivative. Remains the current generation after later updates.

  • 2019/2020 major update — 4M stage only

The major 2019/2020 redesign and later technology updates refresh equipment and styling within 4M. Log as facelift / model year — never invent a generation between 4M launch and later MY updates.

  • SQ7 · hybrid quattro · TFSI e · equipment

SQ7 = 4M performance derivative. hybrid quattro (4L) ≠ TFSI e (4M). Air suspension, five/seven-seat layouts and towing packages are equipment/VIN fields — never assume every Q7 has them.

Always log generation (4L / 4M), lifecycle stage, model year and engine code before comparing engines or service themes. Never invent a third generation for the 2019/2020 facelift.

2. Market & model information

  • Engine, trim, transmission, seating, towing and hybrid availability vary by market, generation and year
  • Service programmes (Fixed/Flexible) and inspection systems are market-local — never assume UK MOT globally
  • US / Canada: retail Q7 exists — powertrain packs differ from full EU diesel/PHEV lists
  • Towing capacity and nose weight are VIN/specification dependent — never publish one universal Q7 figure

Market is context, not a wall. A Polish Q7 owner can still use UK/German/Spanish discussions where generation, engine code and transmission match. Use the selector for engines, service and inspection panels only. Never treat one market’s Q7 specification as the global specification.

3. Engines, powertrains & drivetrains

Engine availability changed by market, generation and year. Do not present one engine list as universal. Always resolve generation + engine code first. V2 will deepen engine → gearbox → suspension → towing → MY → market matrices and PHEV infrastructure.

  • Petrol — FSI / TFSI families

4L families include 3.6 FSI V6, 4.2 FSI V8 and later 3.0 TFSI applications. 4M families include 2.0 TFSI (selected markets), 3.0 TFSI V6 and higher-output 4.0 TFSI V8 on selected SQ7 configurations. Same displacement badge does not guarantee identical hardware.

  • Diesel — TDI (selected markets / years)

Important families include 3.0 TDI V6, 4.2 TDI V8 (4L), 4.0 TDI V8 on selected SQ7 applications, and the rare 6.0 TDI V12. The 3.0 TDI became a major European Q7 powertrain. Do not treat all 3.0 TDI engines as identical — V2 separates engine code, power, emissions, MY, transmission and market.

  • Electrified — hybrid quattro · TFSI e

Treat 4L Q7 hybrid quattro and 4M Q7 TFSI e as separate families. Log system output, battery evidence and charging separately — do not invent one hybrid matrix or merge HV checklists.

  • Transmissions — Tiptronic 6/8 · hybrid-specific

Q7 is predominantly automatic: 6-speed tiptronic, later 8-speed tiptronic, and hybrid-specific architectures. Manual was not mainstream. Store transmission (and gearbox code where known) separately from engine family — do not use one universal “Q7 automatic” specification.

  • Drive — quattro · SQ7 · equipment fields

quattro is central across generations; exact architecture changed over time. SQ7 is the 4M performance derivative. Air suspension, seating configuration and towing package are equipment/VIN fields — not body-style generations.

Confirm VIN / engine code before logging timing, Tiptronic, quattro, hybrid/PHEV, air suspension or towing themes.

4. Honest pros

  • Spacious premium large SUV with clear two-generation chronology (4L / 4M)
  • Available three-row / seven-seat configurations on many — but not all — specifications
  • Strong long-distance touring and motorway refinement
  • Strong towing potential on suitable VIN-approved specifications
  • quattro-focused drivetrains across the family
  • Broad petrol and diesel history plus PHEV availability in selected gens/markets
  • SQ7 performance derivative within the same family tree
  • High-quality cabin and extensive driver-assistance options on later cars
  • Strong used-market recognition for a flagship Q-family SUV
  • Good club/forum coverage across Europe and beyond

5. Honest cons

  • High running costs — large tyres, brakes and V6/V8 maintenance can be expensive
  • Air suspension adds complexity when fitted (not every Q7 has it)
  • quattro adds drivetrain complexity and tyre-matching discipline
  • Diesel emissions systems (DPF/EGR/SCR/AdBlue) need appropriate use
  • PHEV systems add HV/charging complexity — keep hybrid quattro ≠ TFSI e
  • Older 4L vehicles are approaching or exceeding 20 years of age
  • Fuel consumption can be significant on petrol/V8 versions
  • Vehicle size makes urban use and parking less convenient

6. Common owner-reported themes

Not diagnostic advice — these are themes owners may document in service records, workshops, forums or ownership reports. Connect each theme to the correct generation, engine code or system. Distinguish manufacturer schedule data from owner themes.

  • Air suspension (where fitted)

Compressor, air springs, height sensors, leaks, valve blocks and ride-height calibration — especially on older cars. A corner that drops overnight needs further diagnosis. This is an inspection theme, not a claim that every Q7 has an air-suspension fault.

  • Diesel emissions (DPF / EGR / SCR / AdBlue)

Short-trip operation can be relevant for DPF/SCR health. Always tie themes to the exact engine code and emissions equipment — not every diesel Q7 is identical.

  • Automatic / Tiptronic

Shift quality, low-speed behaviour, fluid/mechatronic diagnosis and torque-converter themes — keep gearbox-code invoices with mileage.

  • quattro driveline

Tyre matching, drivetrain vibration, differential/transfer service, propshafts and CV joints — log dedicated driveline work separately.

  • Hybrid quattro / TFSI e HV and charging

Charge behaviour, HV warnings, 12V interaction and combustion/PHEV service evidence — keep 4L hybrid quattro and 4M TFSI e separate. V2 will deepen PHEV infrastructure fields.

  • Cooling system

Large-engine Q7s have substantial cooling complexity — coolant, pumps, hoses, radiators, thermostats and fans. Log with mileage and parts.

  • Brakes, tyres and load ratings

High load ratings, tyre matching, uneven wear, alignment and brake-disc wear — SQ7 needs separate performance brake/tyre records.

  • Seating configuration & towing

Five vs seven seats and towbar/electrical module fitment are vehicle-specific. Never assume seven seats or a universal towing capacity — confirm VIN documentation.

  • Infotainment and electronics

MMI, digital cockpit, cameras, parking systems, Matrix/HD Matrix lighting and software updates — note generation and 4M facelift-stage cars.

  • ADAS

Audi pre sense, adaptive cruise, lane assistance, blind-spot, parking/360 cameras and calibration after windscreen or body repairs where fitted.

7. Service & maintenance (market-aware)

Concrete figures must come from the Audi Fixed or Flexible programme for this VIN — not a universal Q7 rule. Use the market selector for regional framing. Timing row is always engine-code specific. Keep hybrid quattro / TFSI e rows distinct. Air suspension, seating and towing are equipment fields.

Service intervals can vary by market, model year, engine, transmission, operating conditions and VIN-specific requirements. Always verify the correct manufacturer schedule.

8. Inspection & roadworthiness

Never title this section “MOT” globally. Local system names change with the market selector.

  • United Kingdom — MOT
  • Germany — HU / TÜV
  • Spain — ITV
  • France — Contrôle Technique
  • Poland — periodic technical inspection
  • Hungary — periodic inspection
  • Turkey — TÜVTÜRK
  • United States — state-specific inspection / emissions
  • Record certificates separately from manufacturer service stamps

Use market CTAs in the selector panel for official portals where curated.

9. Recalls & campaigns

  • Check manufacturer recall resources for the VIN and market of registration
  • UK: GOV.UK vehicle recall checker (where applicable)
  • US: NHTSA VIN recall search — not a substitute for other markets’ campaigns

Recall and campaign availability can vary by market, production date, generation, engine and VIN. Do not combine different markets into one universal recall list without verifying applicability.

10. Official resources

Manufacturer manuals and regional sites plus The Owners Club guides. VIN-specific Audi information takes precedence over generic model summaries.

  • Audi owner manuals / regional documentation for non-UK markets
  • myAudi where supported — software and digital services
  • Service schedule and maintenance records in your Digital Garage

11. Buying a used Q7

  • Identity: VIN · generation (4L / 4M) · MY/facelift · market · seating · engine code · transmission · drive · air suspension · towing · SQ7/hybrid/PHEV flags
  • Engine: cold start, oil/coolant, turbo, warnings, emissions equipment, timing-system history, invoices
  • Transmission: cold/warm Tiptronic behaviour, pull-away, reverse, low-speed, fluid history, diagnostic scan
  • quattro: matching tyres, noise/vibration, differential service, propshafts/CV joints
  • Air suspension (if fitted): sits level, no overnight drop, compressor, ride-height changes, warnings, leaks, sensors
  • PHEV (if fitted): confirm hybrid quattro vs TFSI e, charging, battery health, hybrid operation, software
  • Brakes/tyres/electronics: discs/pads, load ratings, MMI/digital cockpit, cameras, Matrix lights, ADAS
  • Body/documents: accident history, corrosion on older 4L, service invoices, recalls, inspections, towing equipment records, two keys

12. Own a Q7? Protect its resale value

For a large premium SUV, detailed provenance is particularly valuable. Know your Q7. Record its history. Connect with owners. Keep its story.

  • Add Q7 to Garage — generation, engine code, transmission, drive, suspension, seating and towing fields
  • Build digital service history with invoices and mileage
  • Track inspections, recalls, Tiptronic/quattro/air/PHEV/towing work, parts and documents
  • Build a Transfer Pack for the next owner
