Model overview — global Q5 identity

1. Generations & platforms

• 8R — first generation (2008–2016)

  First Q5 on MLB architecture. Midsize premium SUV with petrol and diesel families by market; SQ5 performance derivative. Audi documents Q5/SQ5 2008–2016 separately. Do not invent extra 8R generations for facelift stages.

• FY — second generation (2016–2024)

  MLB Evo midsize SUV with Sportback body style, SQ5 / SQ5 Sportback, hybrid quattro mild-hybrid branding and Q5 TFSI e PHEV (Audi docs 2019–2024). The 2020 update is a facelift inside FY — not a separate generation.

• Third generation (2024–present, PPC)

  Audi confirms the third generation from 2024 on Premium Platform Combustion — first Q5 SUV on PPC — with MHEV plus combustion at launch and later e-hybrid PHEV. Sportback and SQ5 expand the family as derivatives.

• 2020 FY facelift — stage only

  The 2020 update refreshes equipment and styling within FY. Log as facelift / model year — never invent a generation between FY and PPC.

• Sportback · SQ5 · hybrid families

  Sportback = body style. SQ5 / SQ5 Sportback = performance. Keep hybrid quattro, TFSI e and e-hybrid as separate electrified families in the garage.

• Engine, trim, transmission and drivetrain availability vary by market, generation and year
• Service programmes (Fixed/Flexible) and inspection systems are market-local — never assume UK MOT globally
• US / Canada: retail Q5 exists — powertrain packs differ from full EU diesel/PHEV lists

  Treat FY hybrid quattro (MHEV), FY Q5 TFSI e PHEV (2019–2024) and third-gen Q5 e-hybrid as separate families. Log system output, battery evidence and charging separately — do not invent one hybrid matrix.

• Transmissions — manual / S tronic / Tiptronic

  Manual (selected earlier), S tronic dual-clutch and Tiptronic depending on generation and powertrain. Store transmission (and gearbox code where known) separately from engine family.

• Drive — FWD / quattro · Sportback / SQ5

  Front-wheel drive and quattro depending on powertrain and market. Sportback is body style only. SQ5 is quattro performance. Log drive type and body explicitly.

  Oil consumption, leaks, ignition, turbocharger-related faults and warning lights — always generation- and engine-code specific before associating a theme with a vehicle.

• Timing system

  Different Q5 engines use different timing-system designs across 8R/FY/third gen. Avoid “the Q5 has a timing belt/chain” as a universal claim. Record engine code, type, inspection/replacement history, mileage and invoices.

• S tronic / Tiptronic

  Clutch behaviour, hesitation, judder, mechatronic faults, Tiptronic fluid history, gearbox warnings — tie to the exact gearbox code.

• quattro driveline

  Diff/propshaft/CV themes, ultra clutch behaviour and mismatched tyre wear — log dedicated driveline fluid changes with mileage. Not every Q5 is quattro.

• Hybrid / PHEV HV and charging

  Charge behaviour, HV warnings, 12V interaction and combustion/PHEV service evidence — keep hybrid quattro, TFSI e and e-hybrid separate. V2 will deepen PHEV infrastructure fields.

  Tyre brand/size and wear, brake pads/discs, brake-fluid service and wheel alignment — Sportback/SQ5 can differ.

• Infotainment and electronics

  MMI faults, Bluetooth/connectivity, navigation, cluster issues, cameras, parking sensors, warning lights and software updates — note generation and facelift-stage cars.

  Audi pre sense, parking sensors, cameras, cruise control, lane assistance and calibration after windscreen or body repairs where fitted.
