About BMW
BMW has been building cars since 1928 — after earlier aero-engine origins as Bayerische Motoren Werke — and became known for rear-wheel-drive sports saloons that defined the brand's driver-focused reputation. Best known for xDrive all-wheel drive, ZF Steptronic gearboxes, Condition Based Service (CBS) and iDrive digital provenance, BMW sits at the centre of the BMW Group alongside MINI and Rolls-Royce. For UK and EU owners that means CBS service history and iDrive records are central to ownership checks — which is why this site's BMW and MINI guides focus on digital provenance alongside mechanical themes such as ZF 8HP and xDrive.
In the 2026 Driver Power owner satisfaction survey, BMW ranked 5th out of 30 brands with a score of 86.45% (Auto Express, 24 June 2026).
Platform legend
Short reference for the platform shorthand used in the model cards below.
| Platform | Used on (BMW) | What it means for owners |
|---|---|---|
| UKL | X1 (F48), X2 (F39), 2 Series Gran Coupé (earlier) | BMW's front-wheel-drive compact architecture shared with MINI — FWD-based with optional xDrive; service themes and parts often travel across badge siblings |
| UKL2 | 1 Series (F40), X1 (U11), X2 (U10), iX1 | Updated UKL architecture for current compact hatchbacks and SAVs — including battery-electric variants such as the iX1 on the same underpinnings family |
| CLAR | 3 Series (G20), 5 Series, 2 Series Coupé (G42), 4 Series, 8 Series, Z4 (Toyota-shared variant), X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, XM, 7 Series / i7, i4, iX3 (2020–2025) | BMW's Cluster Architecture for rear-/all-wheel-drive mid-size and larger models — longitudinal engines or CLAR-based EVs (i4, iX3); shared ZF 8HP and xDrive themes across the family. Exception: the Z4 is a highly specialized Toyota-shared CLAR variant (co-developed with the Supra) that largely shares only the rear axle with other CLAR cars — generic 3 Series/X5 service guides do not auto-apply. |
| Dedicated EV | iX | BMW's purpose-built electric flagship architecture (not UKL or CLAR) — maintenance shifts toward battery, thermal management and software items instead of combustion service routines |
| Neue Klasse | iX3 (2025/26 gen), i3 Sedan (2026–) | BMW's new dedicated EV architecture — an 800V electrical system, next-generation electric motors/batteries, and a new "Panoramic Vision" display replacing the traditional instrument cluster. A clean-sheet platform, not a CLAR or UKL update — maintenance, diagnostics and even some terminology (iDrive X) differ from every other BMW in this list. More Neue Klasse models (new 3 Series, next-gen X5, iX4) are due through 2027, so expect this row to grow. |
Two BMWs on the same platform often share the same known issues and the same fix — that's why guides on this site are frequently cross-linked across models.
Electric
BMW i3 SaloonElectric saloon · Neue Klasse G50 · 2026–This is the BMW i3 Saloon — the Neue Klasse G50, a fully electric 3 Series launched in 2026. It is not the original BMW i3 hatchback (I01, 2013–2022), a small city EV on a bespoke carbon-fibre platform, and it is not the China-only long-wheelbase i3 sedan (G28, eDrive35L / eDrive40L). The three share a name but no platform, parts or ownership themes. If you are looking for the I01 or the G28, they are separate models and do not appear on this hub.
