Read first — global Passat identity

Nine official generations from 1973 (B1–B9). Current generation is B9 (2023/2024–present, MQB evo). European B9 is Variant/Estate only. B5.5 and the B8 2019 update are technical stages, not new generations. Alltrack and R36 are derivatives. Arteon is a separate model. Market is context, not a wall. Confirm VIN.

1. Generations & platforms

  • Passat B1 — 1973–1980

The first Passat entered series production in 1973. Modern front-engine/front-wheel-drive family-car concept, closely related to the Audi 80. Body styles: fastback, hatchback, Variant/Estate.

  • Passat B2 — 1980–1988

Larger body, broader engine range, Variant, four-wheel drive on selected versions, diesel and petrol options, sedan/hatchback forms depending on market.

  • Passat B3 — 1988–1993

Major styling change, transverse engine layout, increased cabin space, improved aerodynamics, Syncro AWD on selected versions, sedan and Variant.

  • Passat B4 — 1993–1997

Substantial B3 revision with revised front end, improved safety, airbags, TDI, VR6 on selected markets, Variant and Syncro.

  • Passat B5 — 1996/1997–2005

    Longitudinal-engine architecture. Higher refinement, 1.8T, V5, V6, TDI, 4MOTION, W8 specialist derivative, Variant. Taxonomy: B5.5 (≈2000–2005) is a technical/design update of B5 — not a separate generation.

  • B5.5 update — not a new generation

    Treat ≈2000–2005 revisions as technical/design stages inside B5 (passat-b5 · passat-b5-early · passat-b5-5-update). Do not create a separate B5.5 generation.

  • Passat B6 — 2005–2010

PQ46-related transverse-engine architecture. TSI, TDI, DSG, 4MOTION on selected versions, Variant, R36 performance derivative, CC-related body-family context. R36 is a derivative, not a generation.

  • Passat B7 — 2010–2014

Extensive development of B6 architecture. Updated styling, BlueMotion, TDI/TSI, DSG, 4MOTION, Variant and Alltrack. Alltrack is a rugged Variant derivative with its own body/usage taxonomy.

  • Passat B8 — 2014–2023

MQB platform. Sedan/Saloon, Variant/Estate, Alltrack and GTE. Powertrains: TSI, TDI, GTE plug-in hybrid, eTSI/mild hybrid on later configurations. Digital cockpit, advanced driver assistance, adaptive chassis, DSG, 4MOTION.

  • B8 2019 update — not B8.5

Treat later B8 revisions as technical stages within B8: passat-b8 · 2014–2019 · 2019–2023 update. Do not create B8.5 as a separate generation.

  • Passat B9 — 2023/2024–present

MQB evo. European body: Variant/Estate only. Powertrain families include 1.5 eTSI, TDI, eHybrid (150 kW/204 PS and 200 kW/272 PS with ≈19.7 kWh net battery and ~100 km electric range under relevant WLTP) and market-specific petrol/diesel configurations. DCC Pro adaptive chassis. Do not create a new generation for future facelift/software stages unless Volkswagen officially identifies one.

  • Related vehicles (separate hubs)

Technical relationships — not identical cars. Volkswagen: Golf, Tiguan, Arteon, Touareg, ID.7, ID.7 Tourer. Group context: Audi A4/A5, Audi A6, Škoda Superb. Arteon stays a separate model hub.

Always identify generation, technical stage, derivative, body style and market before applying a theme. Exhaustive engine-code matrices are deferred (V2).

2. Market & model information

  • Use the market selector for engines, service and inspection panels
  • Germany, France, Italy and China selector rows are deferred — Europe/Global framing applies until curated
  • European B9 is Variant-only; grey imports must use the original-market handbook and VIN schedule

Passat body styles, engines, transmissions, emissions and trims vary by market and generation. Never present one country’s specification as universal. Pricing varies by market. China Magotan / Passat Pro saloon context is regional naming — not a new European generation.

3. Powertrains / engines / transmissions

Global overview only. Exact outputs are market- and year-specific. Confirm VIN.

  • Petrol

Naturally aspirated petrol, 1.8T, FSI, TSI and eTSI mild-hybrid families across generations.

  • Diesel

Early diesel, TDI, common-rail TDI and BlueMotion applications — availability is market- and generation-specific.

  • Hybrid

Early hybrid where offered historically; B8 GTE plug-in hybrid; B9 eHybrid. Keep generation-specific PHEV data separate.

  • Transmissions

Manual, conventional automatic, Tiptronic and DSG dual-clutch depending on generation. Fluid intervals are gearbox-code specific.

  • Drivetrain

Primarily FWD; Syncro historically; 4MOTION on selected versions including Alltrack and R36.

  • Body styles

Sedan/Saloon is a major part of Passat history through B8. Variant/Estate is a defining configuration. Alltrack is a raised Variant/Estate derivative. European B9 is Variant-only.

  • Performance / specialist derivatives

    W8 (B5) and R36 (B6) are performance/specialist derivatives — not separate generations. Alltrack remains a body/usage derivative.

Do not treat one country’s engine list as global. Exhaustive codes are a V2 database item.

4. Honest Pros

  • Huge global history (1973–present)
  • Excellent long-distance comfort
  • Strong estate practicality
  • Large owner community
  • Broad engine history
  • Strong diesel touring capability
  • DSG ecosystem
  • 4MOTION availability on selected versions
  • Strong used market
  • Excellent parts/specialist ecosystem
  • Later PHEV options (GTE / eHybrid)
  • Strong provenance potential

5. Honest Cons

  • Extremely broad specification range
  • Engine-specific reliability differences
  • DSG maintenance is configuration-dependent
  • Diesel emissions systems can become expensive
  • High-mileage suspension/electrical wear
  • B5–B7 complexity varies greatly by engine
  • PHEV adds high-voltage complexity
  • Imported variants can differ significantly
  • Fleet use can cause heavy wear

6. Owner-reported themes

Investigation themes, not universal defects and not diagnostic advice. Always filter by engine code, transmission, market and model year. Never invent failure rates.

  • B5 / B5.5

Suspension wear, electrical issues, turbo/boost systems, oil/coolant leaks, TDI-specific emissions/turbo issues, automatic gearbox servicing.

  • B6

Engine/timing-system specific issues, DSG/mechatronic concerns on relevant cars, electrical systems, suspension, diesel emissions.

  • B7

TDI emissions, DSG servicing, cooling system on relevant engines, electronics, suspension/brakes.

  • B8

Water pump/thermostat on relevant petrol engines, DSG, infotainment, driver assistance, DPF/AdBlue, GTE charging/battery/software. Distinguish early B8 from the 2019 update stage.

  • B9

Infotainment/software, ADAS calibration, 12V/electrical behaviour, PHEV charging/software, suspension/tyres, brake wear.

7. Service & maintenance

Never publish one universal Passat service interval. Record VIN, market, model year, generation, engine code/family, fuel/powertrain, transmission, drivetrain, mileage/date, oil specification, filters, plugs, timing, DSG, 4MOTION, brakes/coolant/battery/tyres, PHEV battery/charging, software updates, recalls and invoices.

Software / campaignsWhen issued / at serviceEspecially later B8/B9 infotainment and ADAS
Tyres / brakes / estate load wearCondition-basedHigh-mileage Estates and fleet cars need scrutiny

Use the market selector. UK miles are not a global rule. Intervals are whichever comes first unless noted.

8. Inspection & roadworthiness

Use market-specific terminology. Never title this “MOT” globally. Inspection history belongs to the individual vehicle.

  • United Kingdom — MOT
  • Germany — TÜV / Hauptuntersuchung (HU)
  • Spain — ITV
  • Poland — periodic inspection
  • Hungary — periodic inspection
  • Turkey — TÜVTÜRK
  • United States — state-specific inspection / emissions
  • Australia/NZ — state/territory rules

Record certificates separately from manufacturer service stamps.

9. Recalls & campaigns

  • Check manufacturer recall resources for the VIN and market of registration
  • UK: GOV.UK vehicle recall checker (where applicable)
  • US: NHTSA VIN recall search for US-market cars

Store VIN-specific or market-specific information where supported: campaign number, market, production range, component, risk, remedy, completion status, source and check date. Never generalise a recall across all Passat generations.

10. Official resources

Priority: Volkswagen owner/service information; Volkswagen recall/campaign information; national recall authorities; roadworthiness authorities; manufacturer technical documentation; reputable specialists; owner communities.

  • Volkswagen owner manuals / regional sites for non-UK markets
  • Service schedule and maintenance records in your Digital Garage
  • National roadworthiness portals via the market selector

11. Buying a used Passat

  • Identity: VIN, registration, generation, model year, engine code, gearbox, drivetrain, market/import status, body style
  • Mechanical: cold start, oil/coolant leaks, turbo, clutch, DSG/automatic, suspension, steering, brakes, tyres
  • Diesel: DPF, EGR, AdBlue, turbo, injectors, usage history
  • PHEV: charging, battery condition, electric range, charging cable, HV warning history, battery warranty, software — keep B8 GTE vs B9 eHybrid separate
  • Estate: tailgate, boot mechanism, water ingress, load-area damage, towbar, towing history
  • Alltrack: raised Variant identity, 4MOTION hardware service, off-road/towing equipment
  • Documents: service history, invoices, recalls, inspections, ownership docs
  • Fleet / high-mileage: expect heavier wear — provenance beats a vague “full history” claim

12. Own a Passat? Protect its resale value

Track ownership, mileage, servicing, inspection/MOT, repairs, tyres, brakes, gearbox/4MOTION work, recalls, software, modifications, accident/bodywork, photographs and diagnostic reports. Know your Passat. Record its history. Connect with owners. Keep its story.

  • Add Passat to Garage — generation, body style, powertrain and drivetrain
  • Build digital service history with invoices and mileage
  • Track inspections, recalls, DSG/timing/PHEV/4MOTION work, parts and documents
  • Build a Transfer Pack PDF for the next owner
