UK service interval
BMW 5 Series UK servicing is Condition Based Service (CBS) and VIN-led. Confirm iDrive and the BMW schedule. Focus on oil, brake fluid, plugs, filters, brakes, tyres (xDrive matching), coolant, gearbox, diff and transfer case where applicable, 48V/PHEV/i5 items where fitted, software and recalls. Always tag generation: E12 · E28 · E34 · E39 · E60 · F10 · G30 · G60. Never one global interval. Never merge i5 charging into a 520d service, or M5 S63/S68 work into a volume saloon. UK MOT starts after three years, then annually.
Intervals are whichever comes first (miles or months) unless noted. They vary by engine, model year, market and service regime. Confirm in the handbook, service booklet or dealer system for your VIN before you book work.
| Service | Miles | Months | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter (CBS) — ICE/PHEV | CBS / typically ~10,000–12,000 | Often annual (confirm iDrive) | Generation-aware E12–G60. Oil grade is engine-code specific. i5 uses HV and drive-unit items instead of ICE oil. |
| Brake fluid | — | CBS (often ~24 months) | Calendar replacement. Moisture continues regardless of pad wear or regen. |
| Spark plugs (petrol / PHEV) | Per handbook | Per handbook / CBS | Not diesel. Not i5. Confirm the engine code. |
| Air filter / cabin microfilter | — | CBS / often 12 for cabin | i5 still needs a cabin filter. Confirm VIN. |
| Diesel fuel system, DPF, EGR, SCR/AdBlue | Where fitted | Per emissions system | M21 through B57 differ. AdBlue only if SCR is fitted. Note short-trip use. |
| Brake pads / discs | — | Every service / as worn | M5 and i5 M60 packages differ. Regen changes PHEV/i5 pad wear. Log diameters when known. |
| Tyres, pressures and xDrive matching | Regular | Every service | xDrive and 525iX need matched circumference. i5 M60 AWD is a separate drivetrain note. |
| Coolant / thermal system | — | Per BMW schedule | ICE, PHEV and i5 loops are different. Generation and engine-family specific. |
| Gearbox / differential / xDrive transfer case | Per gearbox and handbook | Per gearbox and handbook | 4/5/6/8-speed and manuals differ. i5 drive unit is not a ZF 8HP service. |
| 12V battery | — | Test at service | Separate from PHEV or i5 high-voltage state of health. |
| PHEV HV / i5 battery and charging | — | Per BMW schedule / campaigns | UK i5 356-mile and M60 mile bands are market-labelled. Log SoH method, cables and software version. |
| 48V mild hybrid (where fitted) | — | Per BMW schedule | Do not infer 48V from a G30 or G60 badge. It is not the PHEV traction battery. |
| Software / iDrive version | — | At service or when prompted | E60, G30 and G60 software generations are not the same record. |
| Recall / campaign check | — | At every service | VIN + market + production date. No single global 5 Series recall list. |
Model years
- 1972–1981 (E12): Gen 1 RWD saloon. Age-based rubber, cooling and corrosion. No CBS, xDrive, diesel or PHEV rows.
- 1981–1988 (E28): Gen 2. First diesel (524td) and first M5 (1985). Still RWD.
- 1988–1996 (E34): Gen 3. Touring from 1991. 525iX is the first AWD 5 Series — its own drivetrain service.
- 1995–2004 (E39): Gen 4. Aluminium-intensive suspension. RWD architecture. M5 separate.
- 2003–2010 (E60/E61): Gen 5. Heavy electronics. V10 M5. xDrive only on selected derivatives.
- 2010–2017 (F10/F11): Gen 6. 520d volume diesel in Europe. S63 M5. Later PHEV only where the market offered it. F07 GT is this era, not a new generation.

UK notes
- BMW Condition Based Service drives item timing — trust iDrive and the retailer printout for your VIN. Always record generation (E12–G60) and chassis code.
- UK MOT normally begins after the first three years and then annually. Record the test date, mileage, advisories and failures next to CBS invoices. MOT is not a service stamp.
- UK i5 launch figures (up to 356 miles WLTP eDrive40; about 284.6–315.7 miles i5 M60 xDrive) and G60 dimensions are market-labelled. Do not universalise them.
- E34 525iX is the first AWD 5 Series. Later xDrive is not the same hardware. i5 and M5 service identities stay separate from volume petrol and diesel.
- Intervals are whichever comes first (miles or months) unless noted. They vary by engine, model year, market and service regime. Confirm in the handbook, service booklet or dealer system for your VIN before you book work. Legal note: Service intervals and specifications shown are indicative and collected from public or community sources. Official schedules may vary by model year, engine code, market, or dealer updates. Always verify the vehicle handbook (VIN) or consult an authorised dealer before work.
FAQ
- How often should you service a BMW 5 Series in the UK?
- Follow CBS in iDrive and the handbook for your VIN. UK owners often see an annual or roughly 10,000–12,000-mile oil service when CBS prompts, with separate items for brake fluid and the microfilter. Tag the generation. i5 cars do not get an ICE oil service.
- Does the UK MOT replace CBS?
- No. MOT is the annual roadworthiness test after the first three years. CBS is the manufacturer maintenance schedule. Record both.
- Is an i5 serviced like a 520d?
- No. i5 records are battery health, charging, thermal management, 12V, brakes, tyres and software. A 520d record is oil, diesel aftertreatment and its own gearbox. Both can be G60 cars.
