UK service interval
BMW 7 Series UK servicing is Condition Based Service (CBS) and VIN-led. Confirm iDrive and the BMW schedule. Focus on oil for ICE and PHEV, brake fluid, filters, brakes, tyres, air suspension where fitted, coolant, 12V, software, ADAS calibration and PHEV battery health. Always tag generation: E23 · E32 · E38 · E65 · F01 · G11 · G70. The 2026 car is still G70. Never one global interval. Never merge i7 Gen6 charging into a 740i or 740d service. UK MOT starts after three years, then annually. UK 2026 750e xDrive quotes (489 hp, 18.7 kWh usable, up to 50 miles WLTP) are market-labelled.
Intervals are whichever comes first (miles or months) unless noted. They vary by engine, model year, market and service regime. Confirm in the handbook, service booklet or dealer system for your VIN before you book work.
| Service | Miles | Months | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter (CBS) — ICE/PHEV | CBS / typically ~10,000–12,000 | Often annual (confirm iDrive) | Generation-aware E23–G70. Not an i7 service item. Oil grade is engine-code specific. |
| Brake fluid | — | CBS (often ~24 months) | Calendar replacement. Moisture continues regardless of pad wear or regen. |
| Spark plugs (petrol / PHEV) | Per handbook | Per handbook / CBS | Not diesel. Not i7. Confirm the engine code. |
| Air filter / cabin microfilter | — | CBS / often 12 for cabin | Confirm VIN. Rear-cabin cars still need a clean filter. |
| Diesel fuel system, DPF, EGR, SCR/AdBlue | Where fitted | Per emissions system | 740d and other diesels differ by generation and market. AdBlue only if SCR is fitted. |
| Brake pads / discs | — | Every service / as worn | M760 and PHEV regen change wear. Large brake packages are derivative-specific. |
| Tyres, pressures and xDrive matching | Regular | Every service | xDrive needs matched circumference. Air suspension ride height is a separate check. |
| Air suspension, dampers, Integral Active Steering | — | Inspect every service | Equipment-dependent. Never assume every 7 Series has air springs or rear-axle steering. G70 chassis context can relate to the i7. |
| Coolant / HVAC | — | Per BMW schedule | ICE, PHEV and i7 thermal loops are different. Do not copy an i7 coolant job onto an E38. |
| 12V battery | — | Test at service | Separate from PHEV high-voltage state of health and from i7 SoH. |
| PHEV HV battery and AC charging | — | Per BMW schedule / campaigns | UK 2026 750e: 18.7 kWh usable and up to 50 miles WLTP are UK-only quotes. Fifth-generation HV battery on that PHEV update. Not i7 Gen6 cylindrical cells. |
| Software / ADAS / recall completion | — | At service or when prompted | OS 8 at G70 launch. Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X from the 2026 stage. Recalls are VIN- and market-specific. |
Model years
- 1977–1986 E23: First generation. Inline-six petrol, RWD. No CBS, no xDrive, no PHEV.
- 1986–1994 E32: V8 and V12 and long-wheelbase versions. Technology flagship. Still pre-iDrive.
- 1994–2001 E38: Inline-six, V8, V12, long-wheelbase. Youngtimer provenance matters.
- 2001–2008 E65/E66/E67/E68: iDrive arrives. E65 standard, E66 long. E67/E68 specialist applications. One generation.
- 2008–2015 F01/F02/F03/F04: Turbo petrol and diesel, xDrive, driver assistance. F04 is ActiveHybrid 7, not a 750e.
- 2015–2022 G11/G12: Carbon Core. 2019/2020 LCI is a stage, not a new generation. G11 standard, G12 long.
- 2022–present G70: Seventh generation, globally long-wheelbase. 2026 Neue Klasse tech, Panoramic iDrive, OS X and i7 Gen6 cells are a stage inside G70, not generation eight. PHEV service stays here. i7 battery service stays on the i7 schedule.
UK notes
- BMW Condition Based Service drives item timing — trust iDrive and the retailer printout for your VIN over forum “every X miles” advice.
- United Kingdom: MOT normally starts after the first three years, then annually. MOT does not replace CBS, and CBS does not replace the MOT.
- United Kingdom 2026 750e xDrive launch quotes: 489 hp, 700 Nm, 18.7 kWh usable battery, up to 50 miles WLTP, with a 197 hp motor in the eight-speed Steptronic. Market-labelled. M760e xDrive follows in the same UK PHEV stage. Do not apply those figures to other generations or to the i7.
- i7 50 xDrive, i7 60 xDrive and i7 M70 xDrive are documented on the i7 hub, including Gen6 charging. Do not paste them into a petrol or diesel 7 Series service record.
FAQ
- How often should you service a BMW 7 Series in the UK?
- Follow CBS prompts in iDrive and the handbook for your VIN. UK owners often see an annual or roughly 10,000–12,000-mile oil service on ICE and PHEV cars when CBS prompts, with separate items for brake fluid and the microfilter. Tag the generation. The i7 does not get an ICE oil service.
- Does the UK MOT replace CBS?
- No. MOT is the annual roadworthiness test after the first three years. CBS is the manufacturer maintenance schedule. Record both.
- Is the 2026 7 Series a new generation for service purposes?
- No. 2026 is a major G70 technical stage. Keep launch-stage and 2026-stage software, and PHEV versus i7 battery records, separate. There is no eighth generation.
