UK service interval

BMW 1 Series UK servicing is Condition Based Service (CBS) and VIN-led — confirm the iDrive service menu and BMW schedule. Focus on oil/CBS, brake fluid, plugs, filters, brakes, tyres, coolant, gearbox fluid where applicable, 48V mild-hybrid items where fitted, software and recalls. Always tag generation: E8x · F20/F21 (RWD) vs F40 · F70 (FWD-based). F70 is generation 4, not an F40 facelift. Never merge mechanical assumptions across the RWD→FWD break.

Intervals are whichever comes first (miles or months) unless noted. They vary by engine, model year, market and service regime. Confirm in the handbook, service booklet or dealer system for your VIN before you book work.

Model years

  • 2004–2011/2013 (E81/E82/E87/E88): Gen 1 RWD. Body-specific end years (convertible/coupé later). N-series themes — do not apply F40 DCT or F70 48V rows.
  • 2011–2019 (F20/F21): Gen 2 RWD. N47/B47/B48 and M135i/M140i themes are engine-code specific. Still on the RWD side of the architecture break.
  • 2019–2024 (F40): Gen 3 FWD-based UKL. 7-speed DCT common on automatics. 128ti / M135i xDrive — never merge with F20 RWD or assume F70 identity.
  • 2024– (F70): Gen 4 — not F40 facelift. UK 120 / 123 xDrive / M135 xDrive labelled examples; 48V on selected cars; OS9. Confirm VIN schedule.

UK notes

  • BMW Condition Based Service drives item timing — trust iDrive and the retailer printout for your VIN over forum “every X miles” advice. Always record whether the car is E8x, F20/F21, F40 or F70.
  • UK F70 120 (170 hp / 280 Nm), 123 xDrive (218 hp / 360 Nm) and M135 xDrive (300 hp / 400 Nm) figures are market-labelled — do not universalise to every F70 VIN or to F40.
  • Never merge RWD (E8x/F20) mechanical assumptions into F40/F70 FWD-based service planning.
  • Intervals are whichever comes first (miles or months) unless noted. They vary by engine, model year, market and service regime. Confirm in the handbook, service booklet or dealer system for your VIN before you book work. Legal note: Service intervals and specifications shown are indicative and collected from public or community sources. Official schedules may vary by model year, engine code, market, or dealer updates. Always verify the vehicle handbook (VIN) or consult an authorised dealer before work.

FAQ

How often should you service a BMW 1 Series in the UK?
Follow CBS prompts in iDrive and the BMW handbook for your VIN. UK owners typically see annual / ~10,000–12,000-mile oil services with separate CBS items for brake fluid and microfilter. Tag generation (E8x / F20 / F40 / F70) and drivetrain on every stamp.
Is F70 serviced the same as F40?
Both use BMW CBS on FWD-based architecture, but engines, software (OS9) and 48V mild-hybrid equipment differ. Confirm the VIN schedule and never assume identical procedures from the badge alone — F70 is generation 4, not an F40 facelift.
Do RWD and FWD 1 Series share one checklist?
No. E8x/F20-F21 RWD and F40/F70 FWD-based cars must not share assumed mechanical service items. Log architecture first.
