Replace the Hazard Warning Switch (MQB)

The hazard switch on MQB-platform VWs often develops sticky or intermittent contacts. This guide covers safe removal of the centre trim and replacement of the switch module on a 2018 Tiguan — steps are very similar on Golf 7, Passat B8, and Karoq.

Procedure

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

Disconnect the negative terminal and wait 10 minutes for capacitors to discharge. This avoids airbag/steering-wheel module fault codes when removing trim.

Step 2: Remove centre air vent trim

Use plastic trim tools to release the upper centre vent surround. Work from the bottom edge — there are four clips. Do not pull on the vent louvres themselves.

Step 3: Release hazard switch carrier

With the vent surround out, you will see the hazard switch carrier retained by T20 Torx screws. Remove screws and gently pull the switch forward — the connector is at the rear.

Step 4: Unplug and swap the switch

Depress the connector tab and remove the old switch. Compare part numbers before fitting the replacement. Seat the new switch until the clip clicks.

Step 5: Reassemble and test

Reconnect battery, start ignition (engine off), and verify hazard flash rate and indicator sync. Reinstall trim in reverse order — test fit before tightening screws.
